Wisdom Teeth Removal Overview

For many, those fourth molars known as “wisdom teeth” aren’t quite the gift their name implies. While some are lucky enough to have wisdom teeth emerge without issue, they are uncomfortable, disruptive, and painful for most. Rather than toughing it out, the better solution is usually to have those troublesome third molars extracted by a qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. That’s precisely what the experienced surgical team at Nomad Wisdom Teeth provides.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final set of molars to emerge in the back of the mouth. They typically develop during the late teenage years or early twenties. While some individuals may have adequate space in their jaws to accommodate wisdom teeth without issue, many others experience complications due to lack of space or improper alignment.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

There are several key reasons why wisdom teeth removal is such a common procedure:

What are the Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Preventive Care:

Proactively removing wisdom teeth can prevent future dental problems and complications, saving you from potential pain, discomfort, and costly treatments down the road.

Improved Oral Health:
Removing impacted or problematic wisdom teeth can improve overall oral health and reduce the risk of oral infections, decay, and gum disease.
Preservation of Alignment:
Wisdom teeth can disrupt the alignment of your existing teeth, leading to crowding and misalignment. Removing wisdom teeth can help preserve the alignment of your smile and prevent the need for orthodontic treatment later on.
Enhanced Comfort:
Many individuals experience relief from discomfort and pain after removing their wisdom teeth, allowing them to enjoy improved oral function and quality of life.

What to Expect When Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

  1. Wisdom teeth removal is an outpatient oral surgery, meaning you’ll go home the same day to recover. The process typically entails:

    1. Anesthesia administration, with options including:
      • Local anesthesia: Numbing the treatment area while being conscious
      • Nitrous Sedation to keep you in a relaxed
      • General anesthesia so you remain in deep sleep during the entirety of the procedure
    2. Accessing and loosening the wisdom teeth using specialized dental instruments that gently separate connective tissues
    3. Carefully extracting the wisdom teeth and any remaining tooth fragments from the sockets
    4. Thoroughly cleaning each extraction site
    5. Closing the extraction sites with dissolvable stitches as needed
    6. Placing gauze over the areas to control bleeding and allow blood clotting

The entire process usually takes 30-60 minutes depending on the positioning of your wisdom teeth and the number we remove. You’ll recover for 30-60 minutes before being released with post-op instructions.
